Pasta, Peroni, and a Face like a Pepperoni Pizza

Dan and I have carved out a few, small traditions, but they can be hard to stick to given that our immediate "family" consists of just the two of us.  While we try to have a thankful jar each November, it's always at least a week or so into the month before one of us (usually me, but Dan is a good sport about it) remembers to put out a pen and cut-up paper.  We cook our own private but massive waffle breakfast and spend a morning tearing open our gifts to each other two days early to celebrate Christmas because the 24th and 25th are filled with bigger family gatherings.  We try to buy a lotto ticket every January 1st, but have actually forgotten to do this a few years, and just purchased a few days later.  Our traditions are sweet and very us and a little lazy... no big deal if we forget once in a while because, hey, it's just the two of us anyway, and we can always do a rain check for the next year.

But yesterday, we started a new tradition that I hope we'll try to keep up.  It took us six years of marriage to think of it, but this year, we declared that every April 20th to now be "Celebrate Dan's Dad Day."  You see, Dan lost his father to Lou Gehrig's Disease almost fourteen years ago, two years before the two of us met.  I've listened to years of stories about this immeasurable presence in Dan's life.

I heard about the time where he went to "Bring Your Dad to School Day" and rocked the history category in the class's trivia contest, much to ten-year-old Dan's awe.  (Dan now teaches history, the same passion for visiting nerdy sites very much ingrained in him.)

We've laughed about his idiosynchrasies, like how he would walk away from the tv if there was a scene with adultry in it.  He was loyal through and through and didn't appreciate watching "garbage" like that.

He loved smoking the occasional sweet-smelling pipe on Sunday mornings, reading historical biographies, the movies Animal House and Rocky. and eating Italian food.  He thought that his mother made the best homemade marinara sauces and his aunt made the most sublime homemade pasta, so he would somehow get them to occasionally collaborate on spaghetti together to create perfection.

He used platitudes, both serious and hilarious, which Dan still recites ("You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit."  "When you got 'em by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.")

He was emotional, a hot-tempered driver, always affectionate, a man not afraid to hug his kids often, even when they were embarrassed because teenage friends were around.

I never got to meet him, but I feel like I partially know him.  I've always been hungry for details, stories, anything to feel more connected to this presence in my husband's life.

I don't know how the idea of a day to celebrate him originated.  I think Dan mentioned someday wanting to start a small scholarship in his Dad's name for a selected student at his high school to help buy books in college.  "After I present this to the student, maybe we could have a big Italian meal where all of my family attends and could, you know, talk about my dad."  One of us suggested that until we begin the scholarship that we celebrate him on his birthday: April 20th.  Dan said that our inaugural celebration could be Italian food and a movie and toasting his father, so that's just what we did.

I cooked way too much food:

pesto tortellini

penne with puttanesca sauce and Caesar salad:

and an amazing recipe I borrowed from a friend for something called "proscietto pie."  I'll definitely share the recipe this week because it is damn good, even if it's not a traditional Italian dish. I guess the proscietto made it fit the theme enough for our feast.

Fresh basil for the pie:

My veggie filled one:

Dan's meat and cheese one:

Sunflowers for the table (and an excuse to try my new camera lens):

Lastly, I went to a specialty store to buy Dan some Peroni.  He drank it when we were in Rome, so I thought it would fit.  And he needed something to toast his dad.

After dinner, we went through one of his family photo albums, and then we watched this:

I'd never seen it before, but I've heard it's one of his father's (and family's) favorites. It always made me laugh that his wholesome family is into a movie about drunken frat boys. If anyone brings up the movie, even my mother-in-law will break out with, "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son!" quickly followed by a barrage of quotes from Dan and Jacob...
"Laugh now, but you clowns have been on double-secret probation."
"You fucked up. You trusted us."
"He had a face like a pepperoni pizza."

It wasn't my kind of movie, but I found myself laughing out loud a few times, like at, "Thank you, sir. May I have another?"

It's hard for Dan to talk about his dad without inevitably circulating back to his long and horrific illness, so we made a very deliberate point for April 20th will be a joyous night,  be a celebration about him, about his life.  So that's what it was: just us mauling pasta, laughing about the time his dad corrected a docent at Monticello, and capping the night off with Belushi chanting, "Toga! Toga!"

Well done, Mother Nature

Today is my birthday, and last night we were treated with a freak two inches of snowfall... enough to get Dan and I off for a snow day!  In March!  For my birthday!

Suffice to say, there was some celebratory robot dancing that went on in our house when our school divisions called the news.

So to celebrate turning 32, we've been lounging, watching bad t.v., and hanging at our favorite coffee house for sandwiches and chai lattes.  I'm actually posting from the coffee house right now:

I know it's been a ridiculously long time since I've written anything.  Some of you are so skillful at posting regularly, of having so much to say even when life gets busy, which I envy.  With Dan's brother's wedding earlier this month (hilarious stories involving family drinking moonshine to follow soon) and getting my students ready for SOL's (no hilarious stories about that shit coming... promise) and a few car and home annoyances and my mom's birthday and me being under the weather, I haven't had much time to sit and just be.

But now I do!  Because I have a snow day! Woop Woop!

Dan surprised me for my birthday by taking me to a charming B & B in Charlottesville.  He's not a fan of charming B & B's, bitching about the forced small talk over breakfast and the grandma vibe, but I love the coziness (and freshly baked cookies), so he indulged me.

The one thing Dan did love about this place was their wine and cheese hour.  He reminded me of that episode of Friends where Ross tried to "break even" with a B & B by indulging in all the free stuff.  You know, the one where he stole a bushel of apples and a slew of free shampoos?  Dan just downed three glasses of wine and enough brie and crackers to cater a WASP's funeral.

What else?  We just went hiking and also strolled around the town and UVA's campus.  We were treated with this spectacular display of nerdiness:
Can you guess what sport? If not, you are officially a hopeless Muggle.

It was a game of Quiddich.

Check out the gear:

Note the guy on the left with a pole nestled by his groin, a la a broomstick.

Dan and I watched the bloodbath for several minutes, students grunting and body rocking each other with the ferocity of NFL players.  They "rode" PVC pipes the entire time.  Dan commented several times on the probability of "mashed nuggets".

I guess the goal is to get a bludger through one of the rings.  I realize that me knowing what the ball is called makes me as big of a Potterphile as these guys, so the judging ends now...

Not much else to tell about our trip, just delicious dinner followed by strolling to The Melting Pot for chocolate fondue.  Fondue is becoming a bit of a birthday tradition.  It's been a sugar overload this weekend with the fondue and cookie and tres leche cake my mom brought yesterday:

Which we proceeded to take a ton of posed pictures with because it was almost too pretty to eat:

Over a month of no posting and you all just get this one with Quiddich... and shots of the desserts I ate yesterday.  I love how blogging captures the little moments, you know??  Off to nap before Mexican with friends.  Will be better about posting!

February this and that...

Still February, so I thought I'd post some random going ons lately:

Made these: Strawberry Heart Oreos

recipe and picture from here

My sister Bethany and I visited a mutual friend who is going through a really hard time two weekends ago.  Without getting into details, it was clear that she needed a girls' day, so we drove to her and spent the afternoon eating Mexican and downing margaritas.  I also baked and brought her a batch of these ridiculously fattening heart cookies.

Mine didn't look as good as the above ones, but they were still fun to make:

Watching this soon: Downton Abbey

via here
My friend Missy leant me her BluRay.  I have to balance out all the episodes of The Bachelor that Dan and I have been watching.  Is it as good as everyone says?  Weigh in if you've seen it!

Added these:  Lights to guest room

No more lopsidedness:

Thank you, Target!

Tried this: Traveling journal

Dan and I started a new Valentine's idea: the traveling journal! I heard about this online: grab an old journal, write your husband a love note, leave it somewhere with a pen and a note that says "Read me! Write me one back on the next page whenever you want and leave it somewhere for me to find." I had a journal someone gifted me at Christmas that actually said travel on it and we put it to good use.

We've written about a dozen notes back and forth, mostly inside jokes and quoting our favorite lines from Parks and Rec. I'm thinking it will be a February tradition so we don't put too much pressure on ourselves to keep it up all year.

How was everyone's Valentine's Day?  Ours was nice: I actually made dinner and dessert, and Dan surprised me with an enormous, fluffy robe from the hotel where we spent our wedding night!  I might not ever take it off...

It's heart work

That's my worst pun ever.

Not much going on here, so I thought I'd post a bit of a blog heart attack: Heart Valentine decor, a heart wreath, and Baby Hart :)

This post is a bit of a lovefest, so skip it if you are one of those people who says things like, "I hate Valentine's Day because it's just a Hallmark holiday!"

Okay, you cynics, don't skip it because I have something for you too:

There you go: some inappropriate Valentine humor!

But back to my decor...

Dan teases me about being all about a mantlescape.  It's kind of my secret shame, but I love it like that awful Sandra Lee likes her tablescapes.  It's full-on cheesy and Martha Stewarty, but I love 'em!  At least I limit them to just Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Oh, and now Valentine's Day:

I decided to go with red and tan, instead of the usual pink action.

$2 Target bowl filled with Dan's favorite chocolates:

I got crafty this month!

First, I made these Cupid arrows with dowels, felt, and a couple feathers.  I borrowed the idea from here, and I love them!  Somewhere a fat baby is missing his ammo...

Aren't they cute??

I threw a couple of cards in old frames:

Second craft:  I made this romantic eye chart (ripped off from here on Pinterest).  It was super easy; I used Arial font and put the lines in varying sizes and printed it in color.

For the banner, I just took some clothes pins that I used to display pictures at our wedding and clipped up some tiny Valentine's day cards:

Lastly, I got crafty by making this argyle heart wreath!!

It was basically a ton of wrapping yarn around the wreath.  I wrapped for an entire episode of Parks and Rec and Office.  Then, I just cut out the hearts and criss crossed them with more yarn.

For full directions, you can go to the website where I blatantly stole nicely borrowed (and gave credit) the idea from: here.

Thank goodness for creative people on the interweb for giving the rest of us good ideas! :)

My friend Mali had her baby!  Her last name is "Hart", so I ran with the theme and made her a little "Hospital Survival Kit" in a sparkly heart pail.

Nothing fancy: just healthy snacks, comfy socks, and an eye mask to use when in the recovery room (she had to have a scheduled c-section).

Mali waited to find out if it was a boy or a girl. And she had... little Miss Ruby Elizabeth Hart.  Ruby Hart!  I think my gift was definitely appropriate!  Mom and baby are doing great.  It was over-whelming (so many emotions: wistful, happy, in awe) and wonderful seeing her as a mom when we visited.

I have to include the below picture because Dan decided to hold her but was scared of her flimsy baby neck and had his arms uncomfortable propped up around her in the most awkward way.  The usually quiet Miss Ruby started wailing.  I think she could sense his fear, like a dog.

He got the hang of it after a minute or two though!

Dan and I tried a new Valentine tradition that I'll share later this week.

Until then, I'll leave you with one more snarky Valentine pin:
